From May 8th to June 8th, I had the pleasure of interning for Steven Kilne Productions.
Week 1
On Monday, May 8th, I met with Steven Kline at nine in the morning to discuss expectations, and what specific part of production I’m the most interested in. He then gave me a tour of the warehouse and

After the tour, Steven Kline assigned me to work on programming a case full of new LED wireless lights that had just come in. Once I figured out how to program the lights, I went to work programming the other ten larger lights and the twelve smaller LED lights.
Once I was done with that, I folded 10’x10′ drapes with the help of one of my coworkers Jason, and plugged in the newly programmed LED lights to charge.

After taking a short lunch break, the rest of the afternoon consisted of counting 240 truss screws and loading up the lighting equipment, including the new LED lights, for Senior Olentangy High Schools Commencement.

Once we got to the venue, Steven tasked me with setting up the wireless lights on the stage and against the pillars.

Tuesday, May 9th, we unloaded the truck from the night and loaded the stage railings into the truck to take to the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Jason and I

Wednesday, May 10th, I started by folding the remaining stage skirts from yesterday. Once I was done with that, Steven showed me how to properly wrap cables. I practiced how to wrap cable for seven minutes until it was time to go to the Bogey Inn and the Muirfield Village Golf Club.
First, we met with the construction crew at the Bogey Inn to discuss the concert layout and equipment. Then, we went over to meet with the director of the Muirfield Village Golf Club to discuss lighting for the Champions Pavillion and the tents. We got to ride around in golf carts on the golf course and take a look at where we would set up our lights.
Then, we grabbed some lunch and drove back to the warehouse. Steven tasked me with taking a wet wipe and cleaning the 25-inch cables.
Thursday, May 11th, I helped load equipment into the truck and cleaned the twenty-five-inch cables. Then I plugged in the LED light to charge overnight.
Friday, May 12th, Steven and I loaded the truck with the wireless lights and drove to Olentangy Berlin High School to set up for their pep rally.

I set up the wireless lights with three on each side and four inside the inflatable bear’s mouth. I also got to test out some pyrotechnics that Steven set up. Once we were done, we wait until the pep rally to begin.
Once the pep rally started, it went off without a hitch. One of the boxes with the spark juice did run out mid-rally, but overall a success! When the students were out of the gym, we packed up the equipment, loaded them into the truck and drove back to the warehouse.
Week 2
On Monday, May 15th, Steven, Jason, my other coworker Josh, and I had a quick morning meeting just to go over everything for this week. After the meeting, I helped Jason unload the truck, and then I plugged all the wireless lights to charge. After that, Jason and I drove to the Ohio State Fairgrounds to pick up some cables, and then we picked up the custom road cases at the place Steven ordered them from.
Tuesday, May 16th, my coworker Josh showed me Video World where all our video production comes from. He taught me how to organize folders and video documents on the computers in Video World. He also showed me how to use ProPresenter, where all the moving backgrounds and clients’ video files live.

We then loaded the Olentangy High Schools’ files into ProPresenter for graduation. It took some time, but we got them all in. Josh then show me XPOSE, the program they used to program the video wall. You shape the size of the image you want to the size of the video wall.
We then loaded the truck for the Muirfield Village Golf Club, and I plugged in the wireless lights to charge.
Wednesday, May 17th, we packed up the lights and drove to the Muirfield Golf Club to set up lights in the Champion Pavillion.

We start unpacking the light and I was tasked with programming the smaller lights to all be green and put rods on them.

I then handed them to Doug, lead singer of Rock House and business partner of Steven’s, to screw into parts of the beams. When all the lights were installed, we did one final sweep of the Pavillion before loading the empty cases into the truck and driving back to the warehouse.
Week 3
Friday, May 19th, we set up lights and audio for the Rock House concert in West Jefferson. Since there was already a stage set up for the band, all we had to do was set up speakers, the audio board, and lighting. I made sure the cables that ran from the audio board to the audio box wasn’t a tripping hazard by pushing them against the curb.

After the set-up was done, we just enjoyed the Elvis impersonator and Rock House. Once the concert was over, we packed up our equipment, loaded them into the truck, and drove back to the warehouse.
On Saturday, May 20th, Jason, Josh, and I arrived at the Veterans Memorial Center and started unloading the truck. We then started to wheel all the equipment to the lobby.

I started screwing two sets of three beams together with truss bolts. Then, I set up wireless lights on stage and in the beams. I helped hook video panels together to create two video walls on both sides of the stage and screwed video plates to video panels. Once everything was done, I got changed into the nice clothes I packed and hung out in the volunteer lounge. I came up to observe the event once it officially started.

Once the event was over, it was time to take everything down. We started by unplugging everything and wrapping up cables. Then I packed up all the wireless lights. Next, I unscrewed the video plates on the back of the video wall.

We took down the drapes, then the video panels, then the beams, and finally the decking. When everything was packed up, we started wheeling everything back out to the truck with some help from my dad.

Sunday, May 21st, Olentangy High Schools graduation. I woke at three in the morning and arrived at the site at four. I tucked a cable under the stage as to have no tripping hazards. I then helped put the video panels for one of the video walls together, and screwed in video plates. I then got changed into nice clothes, cleaned myself up, and observed the graduations. During that time, I brought Josh a 112 speaker, worked video for Olentangy Liberty Graduation, worked video for Olentangy Orange Graduation, brought drinks to coworkers, recycled used scripts, Grabbed more soda for crew members, and threw away some trash.

Wednesday, May 24th, We unloaded the truck that had the new lights. I got to work unboxing the five new cases of lights, breaking the plastic seals, and taking them out of their boxes.
Thursday, May 25th, I checked the charging lights and plugged the other wireless lights in to charge. I put the extra light remotes into the Lighting Office and sanded the logo off of all nine cases.

Week 4
Tuesday, May 30th, we loaded two trucks and drove to the Bogey Inn. We put the stage and decking together, screwed beams together, hung banners, and hung beams with motors.

Once the stage was done, Josh, a stage hand and I started putting the video wall together, going row by row, plugging cables, screwing video panels, etc.

Thursday, June 1st, Rock House performs at Bogey Inn. I got there at two in the afternoon and waited until five for the opening group starts playing.

At eight, Rock House took the stage. I picked moving backgrounds that I thought would look cool based on the vibes of the song that was playing and what I thought looked cool.
Week 5
Friday, June 2nd, I worked Video World just like I did the night before, this time for Shucking Bubba Deluxe.

Saturday, June 3rd, same thing. At four, the band took the stage and I started playing around with the video wall.
Sunday, June 4th, We tore down everything from eleven in the morning until three-thirty in the afternoon. I folded drapes, wrapped cables,

Wednesday, June 7th, I was tasked with folding the drapes from the Olentangy High Schools graduation. It took my entire workday, but after a long weekend, it was nice to pop in my earbuds and fold some drapes.
Thursday, June 8th, after we unloaded the truck, I tested the twenty-five-inch cables and re-taped them as the color-coded tape was coming off. I also cleaned each cable after testing them.
